What is Engineering Surveying?
Engineering Surveying is the wide term used to describe the work of surveyors on civil engineering works. Surveying Engineer collect, analyze, & manage the global spatial infrastructure. Engineering surveyors do planning, design, develop, maintenance & operate systematic process to collect and analyzing spatial information about the land, the oceans, natural resources, and man-made features. Engineering Surveyors will generally be the specialists who first examine a completed design for a project and often will identify any design or practicality issues.

Engineering Surveyors will use a wide range of tools to assist them with their on-site work. The most common of these instruments are Total Station, GPS and Dumpy Level or Digital Level.
The engineering surveyor receives the plans for the work and after analysis, will begin to draw them on a CAD based computer programmed. During the drawing and calculation stage, the engineering surveyor will be able to pinpoint any issues in the design or any they see in terms of the practicalities of project the structure. If any issues are found, the surveyor will communicate with the engineering team and help in a preparation of a technical query.
Once design is plotted & calculations are finished, the work on site will start. Engineering surveyors will first create a network of control points around the site location in a position predetermined with civil engineers and supervisors on site. The control points need to be in beneficial, safe and accessible areas but also in areas where they will not be disturbed.
When the work begin, the engineering surveyors always communicate with the site supervisor and discuss which is the best & safest way to continue with the setting out or survey task at hand.
When all the survey data has been recorded, the Engineering Surveyor return to the office to process the data, complete calculations & finally complete the as-built documentation and as-built documentation can be presented on a drawing, spreadsheet or a combination of both.
